Every community project starts with a dream to bring people together, help each other, and create a better future. When we began as WQT Masjid, our goal was to live by values like generosity and unity. These are values that connect all people, no matter their religion, culture, or background. But our journey was tough. Along the way, we faced racism, discrimination, and exclusion. These challenges showed us just how unfair and divided our society can be. As we worked in communities across Hamilton, Halton, Peel, the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and Niagara, we quickly faced many challenges. One of the biggest was systemic discrimination—unfair treatment built into the rules and systems of society. This means certain groups are treated better than others, while some, like us, are unfairly left out.
At The Volunteer Well, we envision a world where compassion and generosity flow freely, where communities stand united in shared purpose, and where the voices of those often overlooked find their rightful place. This vision has fueled our work, but it hasn’t come without its challenges. From facing rejection to confronting misconceptions, our journey has been one of resilience, perseverance, and unwavering belief in the power of collective good.
Facing Rejection from All Sides: A Story of Resilience
In the early days of our work, The Volunteer Well faced a series of challenges that tested our resolve. Despite our focus on serving marginalized communities and advocating for unity, we were rejected by large organizations and funders, often because we didn’t fit into their predefined boxes.
Rejection from Non-Muslim Organizations
One of the most painful challenges we faced was rejection from non-Muslim organizations. They often misunderstood our mission, associating our name with exclusivity, rather than the inclusive values we stand for. Despite our commitment to creating community programs that serve people of all faiths, backgrounds, and identities, many of these organizations were reluctant to partner with us, missing the larger message of social justice and equity that drives our work.
Misunderstanding Within Our Own Community
On the flip side, we also faced resistance within the Muslim community. The idea of bridging cultural and faith divides was met with skepticism. Some believed that the work of The Volunteer Well would erode the values of our faith, which was not the case. We’ve always maintained that our mission is deeply aligned with Islamic principles of charity, justice, and kindness. Yet, this misunderstanding led to challenges in building partnerships with organizations that were closer to home.
Despite these obstacles, we remain committed to advocating for the values of unity, generosity, and shared responsibility. The Volunteer Well continues to push forward, growing stronger with each challenge we face..

Reclaiming Our Mission and Moving Forward
In May 2024, we took a bold step to break through the barriers we faced. We made the decision to transition from being classified as a religious organization to becoming a community welfare organization. This change was not about abandoning our faith—it was about ensuring that we could serve everyone. We wanted to help women, seniors, immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those with disabilities, without any prejudice or limitations.
When we started in March 2022 as WQT Masjid, our vision was always rooted in inclusivity and compassion. After months of thoughtful discussions and collaboration, we were reclassified by the Charities Directorate of the CRA. This reclassification allowed us to serve a broader community under a new name: The Volunteer Well.
While our name and structure have changed, our core values remain the same. We still believe that humanity is entrusted with the responsibility to uplift others. We remain committed to non-judgmental unity, where we connect people based on shared values of love, compassion, and justice.
How We Make an Impact: Programs for Lasting Change
While the road has been tough, we’ve stayed true to our mission and vision. Through programs and initiatives like The Generosity Hub, we are bridging gaps and building meaningful connections within communities.
The Generosity Hub
Our platform connects those who want to give their time and skills—our “Givers”—with those in need—our “Receivers.” By reducing dependence on traditional nonprofit structures, we enable individuals to create more direct and impactful relationships within their communities. Active since 2023, the platform currently hosts 91 volunteers, offering diverse skills to support recipients from various backgrounds. In doing so, we’re reintroducing the power of neighborly support, fostering a culture of kindness and connection.
Programs & Events
We offer a variety of programs designed to tackle social isolation, empower marginalized groups, and promote wellness:
- Senior Care Connect: Combating loneliness among seniors through planned activities and social engagement, ensuring they remain active and valued within their communities.
- Kids Wellness Program: Encouraging children to reconnect with the outdoors and each other, fostering well-rounded growth through nature-based activities.
- Youth Enrichment Program: Youth mentors, aged 15-18, participate in weekly sessions with seniors, engaging in fitness, arts, digital literacy, and socialization, creating mutual learning opportunities.
- Women Standing Tall Program: Empowering self-identifying women to build connection, purpose, and joy through supportive networks.
- Immigrant Integration & Empowerment: Supporting newcomers to Canada with programs focused on language, literacy, job search assistance, and cultural adaptation.
- Empowerment Beyond Boundaries: Offering education, advocacy, and resources for marginalized groups such as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and individuals with disabilities.
Each of these programs is grounded in principles of equity, inclusion, and social justice, aimed at fostering stronger, more resilient communities.
Embracing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
At The Volunteer Well, we are more than just a nonprofit organization—we are a movement for change. A core part of our mission is to actively contribute to DEI goals, not just by talking about them but by embedding them into everything we do.
Through programs that empower marginalized groups, we create tangible pathways for individuals to gain skills, build confidence, and strengthen their communities. Whether through direct service or advocacy, we aim to dismantle systemic barriers and promote social inclusion for all, especially those who have historically been underserved or overlooked.

Beyond the Surface: Making DEI a Reality
Our journey has revealed a troubling truth about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in many sectors, including nonprofits. While the words “equity,” “diversity,” and “inclusion” are often celebrated in mission statements, the actions behind them rarely lead to meaningful change. Our experience has shown that many organizations talk about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) but don’t take real action. They use these words in speeches, on websites, or during events, but it often stops there. Instead of making real changes, many focus on looking inclusive, not being inclusive. These surface-level actions fail to challenge deeply rooted systems of exclusion or support genuine inclusivity.
Real DEI should go beyond words and appearances. It should mean more than just hiring one person from a minority group or making public statements. It requires tangible actions that address systemic barriers, foster authentic representation, and create pathways for marginalized groups to lead and thrive. It should break down barriers, give everyone a fair chance, and include voices that are often ignored.
Instead, many organizations remain stuck in cycles of performative allyship, where the focus is on looking inclusive rather than being inclusive. And nothing changes! This lack of depth contributes to ongoing inequities, especially for smaller, grassroots organizations like ours, which are often excluded from opportunities and support due to prejudice or misunderstanding.
Real inclusion is about more than just words. It is not just about “diversifying the room”; it’s about ensuring every voice is valued and every perspective shapes the outcome. It means listening to people from all backgrounds, respecting their ideas, and making sure they are part of important decisions. Without this commitment, DEI becomes just empty talk, helping no one. With out, DEI remains an empty promise, disconnected from the transformational impact it claims to deliver.
Are You Ready to Be Part of the Solution?
Real inclusion is about action, not just intention. Whether you’re part of a nonprofit, a for-profit business, or simply an individual who cares, ask yourself: Are you contributing to breaking down barriers or unintentionally keeping them in place? Marginalized groups such as seniors, children and youth, women and self-identifying females, new immigrants, people with disabilities, low-income families, LGBTQ++ individuals, Black, Indigenous, Métis, Inuit, First Nations, and People of Color face systemic exclusion daily.
Organizations serious about meaningful equity and inclusion must dig deeper. They need to evaluate their practices and consider:
- Funding Decisions: Are funding streams unintentionally leaving out diverse groups or grassroots organizations?
- Partnerships: Do collaborations truly represent and uplift the communities they claim to serve?
- Bias Awareness: Are unspoken biases against faith-based or culturally specific organizations being addressed?
Change starts when we confront these questions honestly and commit to solutions that open doors for everyone. The choice is clear: Will you stand with marginalized communities or remain silent in the face of inequity?
